The Design Ethics Toolkit: frameworks for considering the outcomes of the products you create
The question of building an ethical digital product rarely contains a simple yes or no answer. It’s a conversation. But how do you go about facilitating that conversation with your team? How do you collect and understand the ethical concerns across different disciplines? And how do you raise any potential concerns about product outcomes to your leadership? By incorporating steps early in the delivery process to do deeper thinking around unintended consequences, teams can come to not only understand their possible impact on an individual user but also on a larger social ecosystem. By looking at problems from many different angles and perspectives early on, issues can be faced and dealt with quickly.
In this workshop we’ll break into small groups to navigate through two of the five exercises in the
Design Ethics Toolkit and you’ll learn how to facilitate the exercises for your teams back home. These hands-on exercises will serve as an overview and introduction to get your started in helping your teams approach ethical dilemmas. By the end of the evening, you’ll learn methods that can help bring awareness to possible outcomes your team may not have arrived at themselves and learn to develop a more ethically considered product.
