Running a Successful UX Research Consultancy: Tips and Tales From Year One

Running a Successful UX Research Consultancy: Tips and Tales From Year One

In December 2017, I left my job as a UX Researcher for a large tech company and started Brazen, a one-woman UX research consultancy. The past year has been a whirlwind: I’ve worked with 12 fantastic clients, tackled tons of complicated projects, and far exceeded my financial goals.

This talk synthesizes key learnings about running a thriving consulting business from this very intense year of successes and failures. Through examples and stories, I’ll share unique ideas and concrete strategies for what to do (and what NOT to do) in your endeavors as a UX freelancer or consultant.

I’ll cover…
• Landing clients and turning them into repeat customers
• Evaluating whether a project is a good fit
• Creating proposals, pricing projects, and interpreting contracts
• Impressing clients and keeping them engaged through a project
• Experimenting with new offerings and approaches
• Tracking business metrics and planning for the long term
• Growing your business sustainably
